Next-Gen Builder
The Next-Gen Builder is the updated version of the Knack Builder, with streamlined navigation and enhanced data management capabilities. The updated data table includes infinite scrolling, inline editing, validation rule toggling, and the ability to add and save multiple records at once.
How to switch to the Next-Gen Builder
You can switch to the Next-Gen Builder from inside any app. Open an app from your Knack dashboard, then look for the version indicator in the top left of the Builder, just to the right of the app name dropdown.
The version indicator shows Classic as a pill, with a Switch to Next-Gen link next to it. Click the link to switch the current app to the Next-Gen Builder.
You can switch back to Classic at any time using the same toggle. The pill will read Next-Gen with a Switch to Classic link next to it.
Setting your default version from the dashboard
You can also set your default version from your Knack dashboard. The toggle appears at the top of the Apps page and controls which version your Builder and Live App open in by default.
You can switch between Classic and Next-Gen at any time from inside the Builder, regardless of your default setting.
What's different in the Next-Gen Builder
Updated layout
The Next-Gen Builder uses a new shell layout with a collapsible left navigation bar. You can collapse the left sidebar to maximize your screen space when working with large datasets or complex workflows.
Field control directly from the data table
You can update field settings without leaving the data table. New field header options put common field actions inline, so you no longer have to switch to the Fields tab to make changes.
Record-based saving
Records save individually, with or without validation. This gives you more precise control over data updates and reduces the risk of accidental changes across multiple records.
Benefits at a glance
Data management
- Efficient data manipulation: Infinite scroll, inline editing, and keyboard navigation (tabbing and arrow keys) speed up data entry and edits.
- Record-based saving: Save changes one record at a time for tighter control over data integrity.
Navigation and layout
- Enhanced user interface: The new shell layout includes a collapsible left navbar and table search for faster navigation.
Viewing data
- Improved field control: Manage field settings directly from the data table using the field header selections, with no need to switch tabs.
- Streamlined sorting: Sorting has moved out of the Settings menu and into the data table itself. Sorting also no longer interrupts adding new records, and is decoupled from the Live App grid sort.
