Allowing Connected Field Selection Without Table Access
Learn how Connected Field Selection lets Knack users pick a value from a connection field even when their role has no access to the linked table.
What You'll Learn
This article explains Connected Field Selection, a Data Access Control (DAC) setting that lets users select a value from a connected field even when their role has no access to the linked table.
The Problem This Solves
Sometimes a user needs to pick a record from a table they don't otherwise have access to. For example, a form might include a connection field pointing to a table where the user's role is set to No Access under Data Access Control. Without a way around this, the user would hit a wall trying to fill out the form.

How Connected Field Selection Works
Turn on Connected Field Selection to let users select values from a connected field without having access to the linked table. When enabled, users see only the display field in the dropdown. They're blocked from viewing or navigating to the full record behind that value.
This keeps the underlying table locked down while still letting users complete forms that reference it.
Common Mistakes
- Assuming connected field selection grants broader access. It only exposes the display field in a dropdown. The user still can't view or open the linked record.
- Turning this on as a workaround instead of reviewing the access level. If users need more than just selecting a value, consider whether the table's access level should be View Only instead of No Access.
